Living in Portree
Portree is the capital of Skye and one of the few places in the world with a professional Quidditch team (would JK Rowling lie to you?). The island also has a very good shinty team as well. With two supermarkets, banks, swimming pool, cinema, library and petrol stations it is also home of the island’s high school which takes the pupils from its own primary school and the 14 others on the island.
Portee is also the public transport hub with busses around Skye and daily links to Inverness and Glasgow.
They take their shinty very seriously on Skye as well as their Quidditch. The shinty side, Skye Camanachd, plays in the premier league and has ladies and youth teams as well at their ground, Pairc nan Laoch at Portree.
There is a story that you hope is true: one Saturday there was a big cup away-match and a sign appeared at the side of the road near Kyleakin: ‘Would the last person to leave Skye please turn the lights off’.
Any Harry Porter devotee will tell you that there is a professional Quidditch team, Pride of Portree; now wouldn’t you just love to read their match reports in the The Oban Times each week.
Jobs in Portree
With stunning countryside to explore, along with a leading arts and education destination in Sabhal Mòr Ostaig on the island, and a rich heritage, it goes without saying that Skye is a world-class tourist destination with a tourism and hospitality sector which ranges from back-packers’ hostels through to the finest restaurants and hotels. Such a wide-cross section of tourism has seen the development of many artists’ studios and artisan craft and food producers. The island also has its famous Talisker distillery and a number of craft breweries; the first and most well-known being Isle of Skye Brewing Company set up by two teachers from Portree High School.
Crofting, aquaculture, forestry and public sector roles are the other main employers and the island also has a large number of self-employed and business start ups.
