Living in Lerwick
Lerwick is the capital of the Shetland Isles, nearer to Norway than they are to London, the whole archipelago is classed as a UNESCO Global Geopark - so you know you are going to live and work somewhere unique and in Lerwick you are at the heart of things.
Because of the remote location Shetland has an incredible sense of community; work here and you will soon get to know everyone, they truly value everyone’s positive contribution to the community.
The landscape, music and culture are woven into daily life; the islands are home to an incredible number of artists and musicians. The Shetland fiddle style is distinctive. They take their traditions and culture seriously but that doesn’t mean they don’t have fun; Up Helly Aa fire festival takes place in Lerwick at the end of January and it is a glorious festival which culminates in a torch-lit procession of winged-helmeted Vikings throwing their flaming torches into a traditional galley.
Lerwick is the centre of Shetland life for shopping, entertainment and culture it is the ferry terminal and port.
The Shetlands are linked to mainland UK by ferries from Aberdeen, some via the Orkney Islands. Shetland Airport, Sumburgh, has scheduled services to Kirkwall, Inverness, Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh and to Bergen in Norway with summer one-stop flights to Manchester and the Faroe Islands introduced in 2017.
The remoteness means a high level of self-sufficiency and this is reflected in the number of health, education and public sector jobs on offer within Shetland, not to mention its growing tourism sector – boosted by the success of the recent BBC drama series Shetland and the numerous documentaries filmed there.
Between the social services, childcare and education, there are a lot of ways to get involved within the Shetland community and make a positive impact; you will have the chance to get to know the community and make a real impact.
Working in Lerwick
Many of the roles you will find will be posted by the Shetland Islands Council. The Shetland Islands Council have a strong history of welcoming people and cultures from across the globe and this is as evident today as it is from the island's rich archaeology.
Over the last 30 years, Shetland has undergone some major economic and social changes, which the islanders committed to managing, especially the arrival of North Sea oil and gas. If that’s a challenge you’re interested in, they are always excited to bring on new team members.
