Living in Carlisle
Carlisle is home to the county and city councils and the University of Cumbria and the North Cumbria University Hospital NHS Trust.
Carlisle is also a major cultural, retail and social and sporting hub for rural communities on both sides of the border.
Carlisle was a manufacturing and engineering centre right from the start of the industrial revolution and the town has many engineering parks to this day.
The location has also seen it become a major part of the nation’s transport infrastructure; at one time Carlisle had the largest train marshalling yards in Europe; today it is a major stop on the West Coast main line with other lines going to Newcastle, Leeds and Glasgow via Dumfries.
The M6 the main north-south motorway on the west coast and many major trunk A roads are linked to Carlisle, prompting it to become a centre for logistics as well. The famous Stobart Group began here and has its headquarters in Carlisle to this day.
Carlisle Airport will once again be open to commercial flights in the summer of 2018 with routes to London Dublin and Belfast.
